Beauty Behind Bars

I don't know about you, but I am tired of Paris Hilton. She was in jail, she was out of jail, she was back in jail, and now she's out for good. The world is a safer place.

I was flipping through the channels last night, I stumbled on the last few seconds of a piece on Inside Edition about how women in jail use bizarre, everyday items to gussy themselves up. I only caught a woman using Cheetos as blush. Cheetos? Paris Hilton used Cheetos for blush?

Wow....I had to know more, and since I missed the majority of the piece, I went online to get more information. Thankfully I found this article (below). So the next time you're in jail, just remember this story and bust out the Crystal Light to make yourself all pretty.

WOMEN BEHIND BARS: SKITTLES, CRYSTAL LIGHT AS MAKEUP

Charlotte County--Inside the H block of the Charlotte County Jail, you won't find a hotel heiress. Instead you'll see 54 female inmates, all serving their time.

"We don't let the time do us, we do the time," said inmate Veronica Posey.

Inmates say Paris Hilton doesn't stand a change behind bars.

"She would not survive here at all," said one inmate who did not want to be identified.

"You know, she just always has her makeup and hair done, all the necessities, like facials and spas," added Traci Mace, another Charlotte inmate.

But Friday afternoon, a California judge ordered Paris to go back to jail. So, how will she survive this time around? Charlotte inmates say the answer is: Skittles.

Female inmates at the Charlotte Jail aren't allowed to bring in or wear makeup, so they improvise. They use things such as: Skittles candy, Crystal Light, and instant coffee to look pretty. They call it "fake up."

"We get some hair grease stuff and put it on our lips. The ink pens that I have, we use as the eyeliner. This is coffee, the eye shadow," as Mace pointed to the light shade of brown above her eye. "We use the glitter from cards, so thank goodness people send cards with glitter on them."

"Vaseline for my lips and a little bit of coffee and Crystal Light mixed, so it's neutral," said the unidentified inmate.

"The lips are Crystal Light and the blush is Crystal Light," Posey pointed out.

Sitting face-to-face and talking with the women, you would have no idea that these items could end up looking like makeup you would find at any professional counter.

"Basically just being here for so long, you'll find a way to look pretty," said Posey.

Many of the products can be purchased at the jail's commissary. Guards say if they see it happen, they'll stop it, but it happens often.

"It's something to feel more feminine because you can be pretty gross in here if women don't have their makeup," said Mace.

"I don't do it every day. I do it when I need to feel like I'm on the outside," added the unidentified inmate.

It's the only way these women can keep looking glamorous. As for Paris, perhaps she'll quickly learn the "secret to beauty" behind bars.

Plastic Fantastic?

As your resident beauty blogger, I read tons of fashion and beauty magazines each year, but have recently let all my subscriptions expire. Every couple of years, I go on a hunt for interesting magazines to change up my regular reading. Sure, there's the usual suspects: Vogue, Glamour, Allure, etc., but it's fun to read magazines like Bitch and Bust from time to time for a more rounded perspective on women's issues and lifestyles.

In my recent attempt to review new magazines, I somehow picked something called New Beauty, which declares itself "the world's most unique beauty magazine." The issue I grabbed is the Makeover Issue, and from the cover, it looked interesting enough.

Then I read it. Holy guacamole! This is a plastic surgery magazine!! Wow!!! I was completely unprepared for articles about lip injections, liposuction, and vaginal rejuvenation (umm...what?). Imagine my surprise when I flipped to the section on anti-aging secrets hoping to hear about the latest serums and creams and instead was force-fed all the reasons why I need a face lift. I had no idea such a magazine even existed.

I'm really ambivalent about plastic surgery. On one hand, go ahead and do what you want, as long as your are willing, educated, and can afford the procedure. On the other hand, natural beauty really is, well better. There are far too many Twilight Zone episodes about plastic surgery and society's demands for conformity that leave me feeling more than a little unsettled about the whole thing.

Anyway, I was totally bummed that New Beauty was a plastic surgery rag. What a disappointment. My search for cool beauty mags is still on, so if you know of any good ones I need to read, leave me a comment!

A Cut Above?

Every time I log on to my hotmail account lately, I see a teaser for this article, all about the $800 haircut. No, I did not hit the "0" button one too many times...I did in fact type $800.

In the article, the writer meets with the stylist who charges $800, a man named Orlando Pita. Orlo insists that he's "just a hairdresser" and counts Madonna, Gweneth Paltrow, and Naomi Campbell among his clients. His $800 haircut is a razor cut and is meant to be subtle. He says that a good cut shouldn't make you look like you just walked out of the salon. But for $800, it better look amazing. It better grow out perfectly, be easy to style, and transform me from my state as a mere mortal to something larger than life. And, it better last.

Now, I don't know about you, but I cannot imaging paying this much for a cut. I don't think I'm alone here, since the average price Americans pay for a cut is $21 (god--where are they getting their hair done for that price?). I'll splurge on my hair from time to time, and as long as I feel like I am getting what I pay for, I'm usually happy. However, I've had far too many experiences where I was paying more than I wanted and not getting what I paid for.

What are your thoughts? While $800 is outrageous, how much would you pay for a super trendy, "celebrity" cut? To Madonna, an $800 cut is probably like an $80 cut for me. It's all a matter of perspective, income, and values. I'll tell you this: if I had an extra $800 laying around each month, the last thing I would do is use it for a haircut!

I'm Melting

I grew up in the Baltimore area and suffered though 18 summers of the Three Hs: hazy, hot, and humid. Not only is Maryland hot in the summer, it's also crazy humid. I remember with no fondness whatsoever how my hair would flop and grow limp, how my mascara would run, and how my foundation would slip, all thanks to 100 degree days with 100% humidity. (It's no wonder I moved to the Pacific Northwest where we have very little heat and hardly any humidity!)

If you live in a place with high temperatures and so much humidity that you can almost swim through the air, applying makeup can be tricky. Here's some helpful advice I could have used all those years ago:
  • Stop slippage before it starts by controlling your skin's natural oils. Use products that reduce the amount of sebum in your skin. Sebum is the stuff in your skin that promotes yucky things like oil, acne, even body odor. Start your day with something like Cosmedicine's Healthy Cleanse Foaming Cleanser and Toner All-in-One that will clean your skin and keep oils at bay.
  • When applying makeup, use a skin primer that will provide a matte finish. Products like Make Up Forever's Base Matifying Primer will remove shine and leave your skin velvety--not greasy.
  • Change out your normal cosmetics for the summer and opt for long-lasting formulas like cream-based eye shadow, waterproof mascara, waterproof liquid eyeliner, etc.
  • If you're really concerned about a makeup melt down, try a makeup sealer like those found in this cool kit to keep your face in place!
Get out there and enjoy your hot, humid days. I'll be just fine in the rainy, moderate Seattle climate!

Summer Trend: Gray Eyes

I'll be the first to admit that when it come to eyeshadow, I am very much stuck in a creamy, chocolatey rut. I always seem to be wearing some sort of cream and brown combo because I am under the impression (probably the wrong impression, but I don't care) that my cream and brown combo makes my baby blues stand out.

This summer, beauty editors are suggesting we use gray eyeshadow, especially for evening wear. Touting it's more subtle qualities, gray is less aggressive than heavy, smoky charcoals and blacks.

Here are two ways to wear it: Wash a gun metal gray over your lids or apply a glittery charcoal at your lash line and blend a creamy slate to the brow bone. Either way, be sure to apply extra mascara for more definition, and keep your cheeks and lips soft pink. Gray eyeshadow does not pair well with the afore mentioned grape lip.

This is one trend I welcome. And maybe you'll catch me straying from my usual cream and brown in favor of a gray. There are so many shades of gray out there that there's bound to be something for everyone. Whether its a sexy slate, an icy silver, or a neutral steel, I'm sure you'll find a flattering gray to wear this summer.

Summer Trend: Grape Lips

Ah, summer...time to indulge in frozen novelty treats like Good Humor Bars and Creamsicles. Remember when you were a kid and you'd slurp down Otter Pops? Not only would you indulge in the sweet, fruity flavor, but (if you're anything like me), you'd also revel in the fact that your tongue and lips were dyed purple, green, or bright red. Oh what fun.

With grapey-purple Otter Pops in mind, beauty editors are once again declaring that purple lips are "in" this season. An intense shot of purple on the lip invokes a fun, carefree look that's perfect for the responsibility-free days of summer. If you want to get in on this trend, try out one of these:
  • MAC Tinted Lipglass in either Desire, a full bodied, creamy, purple or Bold Heart, a shimmery, deep berry, $14.00 each.
  • Shu Uemura Gloss Lacquer in Irrational Purple, a knock-your-socks-off, super bright, almost plasticy purple, $26.00.
  • Max Factor MAXwear Lipcolor in Grape Ape, an 8-hour lipcolor that includes a top coat that adds a great amount of shine, $9.00
What's your take on purple lips? I'm a boring, traditional kind of girl and prefer my lips to be red or pink...that's just me! If I were more adventurous, I could see digging the purple lip trend, but it seems like beauty editors keep selling us the same old trend over and over again. Oh well--what do I know?

Come Fly With Me!

I don't know about you, but I can't wait for summer to come so I can get the hell out of Dodge (Dodge, in my case, being the Seattle area). I'm planning a trip back east to my adopted home state of Vermont at the end of July and I'm really looking forward to being there. Getting there, however, is another story. I hate to fly. I'm not afraid to fly, I just hate being stuck in a tin can full of people with various germs, sucking in recycled air. It's not appealing.

In June's Allure, there was an article on how to fly without looking and feeling like absolute crap upon arrival. Since recycled air and pressurization lead to dehydration and swelling, Laura Mercier, the noted beauty belle, gave the following advice for saving face (quite literally) and flying fabulously:
  • Starting the day before your flight, modify your diet by eating lightly and avoiding salty foods that may cause you to retain water and swell up during your flight.
  • Be sure to get plenty of exercise and rest the day before your flight.
  • The night before you leave, exfoliate your skin and then use a hydrating mask to make sure you get some extra moisture.
  • The morning of your flight, cleanse your face and add your everyday moisturizer to still damp skin. Also be sure to use a good eye cream and apply a thick lip balm or Vaseline to your lips. The more moisture, the better!
  • When you pack your carry on bag, be sure to follow all the TSA's ridiculous restrictions, but fill your plastic bag with sample sizes of your favorite moisturizer and eye cream. If you don't have sample sizes, you can get little bottles from drugstores or places like the Container Store to fill for your trip. You'll also want to pack a stick foundation, some cream-based eyeshadow, and some cream-based blush in your carry on.
  • Keep your makeup simple while flying, and avoid powder-based makeup. Instead, just dab on a little concealer, some light cream blush, and tinted lip gloss.
  • While on the plane, keep hydrated. Mercier recommends continuously drinking water throughout your flight, and having a cup of warm water (or caffeine-free tea) every hour while you fly.
  • Before you land, apply an ice cube to each eye lid for a few minutes to reduce puffiness and refresh your skin. Also, take a moment to reapply your lip gloss and blush and to apply a few swipes of eyeshadow and mascara.
There! You'll be beautiful when you reach your final destination. I'm flying a red eye to JFK in about a month--I'm so overly thrilled about that! But at least if I follow some of these tips, my skin won't suffer. Thank you Allure and Laura Mercier!

Summer Nails

On Saturday morning, I had a fabulously relaxing pedicure to start my weekend and chose a pretty rosy pink for my toenails. Women around me were also opting for cheerful pinks and other more subtle tones. I don't know about you, but it is so refreshing to be wearing soft nail colors again. Yes, this past winter's dark gothy nails were a lot of fun, but I'm really loving this summer's lighter shades.

One of my friends mentioned to me that she was going to buy several of OPI's Garden Party SoftShades from a discount site online. And for good reason. OPI's line of flattering, soft-hued nail lacquers includes shades like No Bees Please, a very natural looking beige pink, and I'll Take the Cake, a sugary-sweet pale rose. All these colors look easy to wear, and a bit flirty and sexy. Their natural pinks and creams are relaxing and gorgeous. (Plus Garden Party makes me think of the hilarious commercial for Smirnoff Raw Tea--the Tea Partay ad with the New England gangstas--and that just makes me laugh and puts me in a good mood!)

Meanwhile, Essie is taking a less gentle approach than OPI this summer and has launched their Buckle Up collection. They're featuring colors like Loophole, a shimmery, cool silver, and Huckle Buckle, a decidedly non-subtle purple shade. They're going for a more mod, more dramatic look that is more fun than OPI's Garden Party, but it's a little trickier to pull off.

Today, while roaming aimlessly around an arts festival, I saw a woman who had painted her nails yellow. Banana yellow. It was awful and looked like a huge mistake. Picking a nail color can be hard, but it seems to me that banana yellow would never make my short list.

So, when you go in for a mani or pedi, what types of colors do you go with? Are you planning on using any of the new colors this season?

Foot for Thought

Ah, Friday--the end of a horrifically long week. Not only am I grateful for the coming weekend, but I'm also happy because I have a pedicure scheduled for tomorrow morning. I don't know about you, but I love getting a pedi. There's nothing better than sitting back, reading a magazine, while someone files my nails, massages my feet, and paints my toenails.

Oddly enough, I was flipping through June's Allure, and their little beauty by the numbers section was all about feet. Here are some facts/figures I found interesting:
  • 32% of women are uncomfortable having other people touch their feet. Wow--that seems high to me. You want to rub my feet? Hell, knock yourself out. I have no problem with it, thus my pedicure love.
  • 23% of women get a pedicure every month. I usually get a pedi once a month from about April to October (baseball season!). The rest of the year it isn't as much of a priority for me. But if I had the finances and time, I'd probably get a pedi once a month all year long.
  • 62% of people say that it is normal for their feet to hurt. I don't know that it's normal, but it sure is common, especially if you've spent the entire day in 4-inch heels.
  • The average woman owns 27 pairs of shoes. Hmm...does this count flip-flops? I have no idea how many pairs of shoes I own, but if you do count all the flip-flops (not to mention my ultra cute pair of bowling shoes!), I've far exceeded the average.
  • The average shoe size for women in the US is a size 8. I wear an annoying size 6...annoying because it's hard to find shoes in my size as easily as women who have a size 7 or 8. *sigh*
  • The average shoe size for men in the US is a 10 1/2. God, my husband wears a size 13--he has monster feet compared to me. Of course, he's 6 ft. 3 and I'm only 5 ft. 2!
  • Foot fetishes are the #1 most common fetishes. Woo-hoo--let's hear it for the feet!
Wow--that was enlightening. Now I can go off and enjoy my pedicure with the 68% of women who don't mind having their feet touched.

White Stripes

White eyeliner has been showcased in the beauty world for a while now, but I never paid much attention to it. A lot of people have very strong opinions about white liner--they either love it or hate it. I've had no real opinion, though I have personally never tried white liner. However, I recently saw a woman at Sephora wearing it and it looked amazing on her. This all got me thinking--how are you supposed to wear white eyeliner? Could I, a mere mortal, pull off the look?

Here are some guidelines:

Why wear white eyeliner?
It makes your eyes look larger and defines their shape better than black, brown or other dark shades. It also seems to illuminate the skin and provides a fresh looking face when done right. When done wrong, it just looks frightening!

How to wear white liner?
Unlike dark liners, white is best applied to the inner corner of your upper and/or lower lids. This way it brightens a normally dark area to really accentuate your eyes. If you use it on the entire lid area, just be sure to stay as close to the lash line as possible.

Is there a wrong way to wear it?
Of course! A severe, sharp white line around your eyes will detract from your eyes--not what you want. Depending on your skin tone, you might consider using an off-white, shimmery white, ivory, or silver liner to achieve an illuminating look that is similar to white liner but not as shockingly noticeable.

I don't know--I'm still a white eyeliner skeptic, but I'm willing to give it a try. One final word: any time you're trying out a dramatically new makeup look, it is best to try it out at home before you face the world. Practice makes perfect, so you may want to play with your eyeliner pencil if you're considering trying out white liner. I own a white liner pencil and just might have to play around with it. I'll let you know how I do! What do you think? If white eyeliner a do or a don't?

Dear Old Dad

Father's Day is fast approaching. If you're a good girl, you've already picked out the perfect gift, wrapped it, and have the card ready to go. If you're like the rest of us, your dad is one of the hardest people in your life to shop for, and Father's Day is another day for you to stress over. If you need a last minute gift that's not the usual tie or box of golf balls, I just might have the answer for you: sun care.

Ok, hear me out. Your dad might not be the product-using metrosexual type, but hey--this is one gift that might actually save his life. According to some info I came across awhile ago, men are more likely to have skin cancer than women. There are probably many reasons for this, but I bet that one reason is the fact that women wear more SPF-based products than men.

So this Father's Day, get your dad ready for the summer sun and pick him up some great sun blocking products. I suggest Anthony Logistic's Sun Kit. This kit is designed specifically for men and contains different products to keep dad's skin from burning and wrinkling. You could also follow Oprah's advice and swing by the Clarins counter to pick up some luxurious sun care products for your pop.

Show your dad how much you love him by getting him a gift that will keep him young looking and cancer-free! Or go ahead and pick out a sincere blue tie. Whatever.

Friends and Family Deal!

Need to make some additions to your makeup bag? With summer rolling around, I'm anxious to add some new products to my always increasing beauty collection. In my opinion, a new season just means it's time to add some new pieces to my wardrobe and my makeup products.

Apparently, the good folks at Vincent Longo agree, and they want to take help take away the bite of buying high quality, expensive beauty products. As part of their friends and family deal, from now until the end of the month, all you need to do is enter the code vlfamily when you check out at Vincent Longo's website to get a 30% discount. Vincent Longo has some amazing products, and a 30% discount will make my purchases a lot easier on my wallet.

Get shopping. It's great to have friends and family!

Giving Wrinkles the Boot(s)

Did you see yesterday's Today Show? (If not, click here for the segment.) They did a whole story about the phenomenon of Boots No7 Protect and Perfect--a facial serum that has taken the UK by storm. This product went through some pretty rigorous tests and was proven to reverse the damage caused by the sun and to smooth out wrinkles. The best thing for UK women is that Protect and Perfect costs less than $40. The bad thing is that there has been such demand for the product that it is often sold out.

As mentioned on the Today Show, Boots No7 Protect and Perfect is not available here in the States due to FDA regulations. (The government outlaws all the best stuff: unpasteurized cheese, Cuban cigars, and Boots No7 Protect and Perfect--all considered too dangerous for us here in the States. So glad they're protecting us from such evils!) However, Boots is selling No7 Restore and Renew, an almost identical product that promises the same results, at Target and CVS for less than $20. What a deal!

I've been using Restore and Renew for about 2 weeks now and have noticed that my skin is really smooth. I haven't been overly aware of the two lines I loathe and obsess over, so that's a good sign. I'll keep using Restore and Renew and will report back with my findings.

Everyone seems to be looking for the fountain of youth...maybe Boots is providing one to the masses.

Be Back Soon!

Sorry I've been away from the computer for the past few days. I've been running around like a manic--working late, shopping, going to the movies, basically living--and haven't had time for a proper entry. Plus it's good to take a break from technology every once in a while!

Bare with me--I'll be back by Tuesday at the latest. Until then, hang tight and check out some of my older posts for your edification. And don't forget you can always email me if you have any questions or topics you'd like me to examine.

Ok, now it's back to housework. A woman's work is never done. *Sigh*

Later, lovelies!

Breaking Up

There comes a time in every woman's life when she has to part ways with someone who knows her really well, someone who knows how to make her feel beautiful, someone who listens to her concerns and does their best to make her the most magnificent version of herself possible. This "someone?" Her hair stylist. And for me, the time to break up may be coming. *Sigh.*

A little background: After years of renting, my husband and I bought our house about 3 years ago. When we moved, I decided it was time for me to find MY stylist, and started going to Gene Juarez, the Seattle-based chain of middle to high end hair salons, where I found the perfect stylist for me. She was young, nice, funny...she listened to me and always gave me a good cut. Plus, she was pretty cheap--about $30. Not bad. So for 3 years, I've been seeing her regularly, happily paying for the two $5 increases along the way.

A few months back, I decided to grow up and stop dying my own hair, and went back to Gene Juarez for my partial foil. Yes, it's expensive, but I was willing to pay the $125 for the foil plus the $40 for a hair cut. I figured, hell...I work full time, my husband works full time, we're childless...why not spend about $170 (before the tip) on my hair?

That was then. Now I have a whole new reality to come to terms with. My stylist's price just increased 25%....what was $40 will now cost me $50, and I'm too scared to ask what my colorist will now be charging. I'm fearful that my formerly $170 cut and color will now be more like, oh, $200 or higher, not including the tip.

I don't know about you, but for me, a 25% rate hike in 8 months seems really high. I wish my pay would jump 25% every 8 months, that's for sure! I'm thinking it might be time to jump ship. As much as it pains me, I need to start playing the field.

So, I'm interested in your opinions on the following:
  1. Do you have a dollar limit for what you're willing to spend on your hair?
  2. How do you find a decent stylist? Who do you trust?
  3. If you live in Bothell/Mill Creek/Lynnwood/Snohomish/Everett area of Washington state, do you have a good stylist and colorist you could recommend?
Breaking up is ugly business.

Total BS! Paris Hilton Out of Jail Already!!

Paris Hilton has not only had her sentence cut short, she is already out of jail! Unimpeachable sources tell TMZ the deal was sealed yesterday, and that Hilton made her exit early early this morning. She was originally sentenced to 45 days in jail, but that was reduced to 23. She served a total of five days -- the normal stay for a violation of this kind. Her five days began Sunday night and concluded early Thursday morning.

The L.A. County Sheriff's Department will hold a news conference in an hour to discuss what went down.

UPDATE 10:16: LA County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore says that Paris Hilton has been fitted for an ankle bracelet and put under house arrest for the next 40 days, after authorities decided to release Paris from jail due to medical reasons. She got out of jail just after 2:00 AM.

Whitmore says he cannot release details about Paris' "medical issue" due to confidentiality, but said that medical officials "constantly examined" her while she was in jail.

Paris will be under house confinement in her West Hollywood home for 40 days. After the 40 days are up, Whitmore says she will have "fulfilled her debt to society." Whitmore made it clear that Paris was not released early -- she was reassigned. She is technically still in custody.

US Weekly Cover - Did Vanessa Hide Her Party Girl Past From Nick?

On June 3, a British newspaper published several shocking photos that showed Lindsay Lohan holding a sharp blade to a mystery brunette's neck as she posed provocatively for a camera. The next day the photos hit the web and the identity of Lohan's partner in knife play was revealed: former MTV TRL host Vanessa Minnillo, 26.

The shots were taken at musician Sean Lennon's apartment in the wee hours of June 16, 2006, after a night out at NYC hot spot Bungalow 8. But when the news broke, was Minnillo's Mr. Nice Guy, Nick Lachey, completely blindsided by the revelations about her hard partying past?

The answer is likely no. In fact, Lachey, 33, had already spent quite a bit of time defending Minnillo's wild-child reputation when they first started dating, just weeks before the scandalous shots were snapped.

"A lot of Nick's friends were complaining about what a party girl she was," says a Minnillo source. "There were many nights in the beginning when Vanessa was a total mess and Nick didn't know what to do." "Vanessa used to be a completely crazy, wild girl," confirms a Minnillo pal. "She'd be the girl that would jump on the tables at every nightclub."

So will the evidence of the outrageous episode in Minnillo's past jeopardize their relationship? Those close to the couple, who recently moved in together, maintain that the scandal won't be a romantic roadblock.

Does Nicole Richie think she's next?

Paris Hilton's good buddy Nicole Richie told David Letterman during a taping for his talk show on Wednesday that she's worried about landing in the pokey, too.

"I'm just keeping my fingers crossed, and, you know, of course, I'm scared also, but, you know, I'm willing to face whatever consequences come my way, and I take responsibility for what I've done," she said.

Richie, the 25-year-old daughter of pop singer Lionel Richie, pleaded not guilty in February to driving under the influence. She was arrested Dec. 11 and volunteered she had smoked marijuana and taken the prescription painkiller Vicodin, but no drugs were found on her or in the car, police said.

Richie already had a 2003 misdemeanor DUI conviction. The California vehicle code says if convicted of DUI twice within 10 years, a person can be sentenced to between 90 days and a year in jail and have his or her driving privileges suspended. During the "Late Show" taping, Letterman asked Richie, who acknowledged previous legal troubles, when she'll learn her fate. "Probably the end of this month," she responded. A sympathetic Letterman wished her the best, saying, "I hope you don't have to go to jail."

Richie starred in the TV reality show "The Simple Life" with Hilton, who has had similar problems. The 26-year-old hotel heiress checked into the Century Regional Detention Facility in suburban Los Angeles on Sunday to serve 23 days for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

Jessica Drops $$$ On Clothes

Jessica Alba reportedly spent $4,300 dollars on clothes in a couple hours over the weekend during a Beverly Hills shopping extravaganza. TMZ initially reported the story:

"During her shopping extravaganza, Alba hit up trendy Harmony Lane boutique twice and charged up ten dresses and five tops in size XS. Jess also picked up some Institute Liberal shrugs and a bunch of Vita bracelets and J.Rae necklaces. Alba was looking for outfits for her upcoming summer travel with boyfriend Cash Warren."

I am all for Jessica trying to look her best, but damn, $4,300 in a couple hours? I guess this could be justified if Jessica was buying $4K worth of bikinis or lingerie, and then modeling it for me at my house. But then again, that would just be another normal day.

Paris Hilton on Sarah Silverman: She's a Bitch!

Paris Hilton may have smiled her way through Sarah Silverman’s raunchy monologue at the MTV Movie Awards where the show’s host poked fun at Hilton's stint in jail, but she wasn’t laughing backstage. Hilton, 26, who turned herself in to serve her sentence only hours after the ceremony ended, was overheard fuming, “She’s a f--king bitch. I hate her.”

But Hilton shed no tears as she checked into the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California, at 11:15 p.m. on June 3 to begin her sentence. “She was quiet,” a source tells Us Weekly. After a medical screening, Hilton – in an orange uniform – entered her 100-square-foot cell at 1:30 a.m. on June 4.

At 2 p.m. -- after lunch was placed through a slot in her door -- she called her father, Rick, who could hear “clanging in the background,” a source tells Us. (She can use the phone for 15 minutes a day.) Although she is alone for now, sources tell Us she could still get a cellmate.

Jen's new Mystery Man Revealed!

So who was that handsome mystery man Jennifer Aniston was spotted holding hands with during a romantic dinner over Memorial Day weekend? The case is solved: It's 36-year-old British model Paul Sculfor, and the pair already have been dating for several weeks, PEOPLE reveals in its latest cover story, on newsstands Friday.

"He's a lovely guy," says his friend and former flame, London socialite Lady Victoria Hervey. "A gentleman. Simple things, like opening doors, he does all that. He'll think of the woman before himself." The 6-foot-tall former boxer and construction worker has shown up in ads for Christian Dior and Jean Paul Gaultier, but he may be best known for a British commercial he starred in for Levi's, in which he plays a drowned fisherman with three mermaids desperately after him and his jeans.

Sculfor and Aniston were first spotted out together over Memorial Day weekend, when they had an intimate dinner at Santa Monica's One Pico restaurant in the Shutters Hotel. The pair slipped into the beachfront eatery with Sculfor gently rubbing Aniston's back as they waited for a table.

Single since she split from Vince Vaughn last year after more than a year together, Aniston, 38, has taken her time getting back on the dating scene. Sculfor, meanwhile, formerly dated Lisa Snowdon (yes, George Clooney's ex) for two years.

When it comes to relationships, Sculfor, who now lives in Los Angeles and is under contract with New York Model Management, once told Britain's the Mirror: "It's hard keeping a girlfriend in this business – you end up conducting your relationship on the phone."

Tony Tells Carrie He Needs a Time-Out!

It looks like Carrie Underwood is joining the ranks of the football widows club! The American Idol winner was recently told by her beau, Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo, that he needed a break from September to January 2008 in order to focus on his game! “Tony loves Carrie, but football is the No. 1 priority in his life right now,” says a source.

Could it be because the San Diego native, 27, was razzed last year for not being on the ball after falling for Carrie? The two met when she performed the “Star-Spangled Banner” during the Cowboys Thanksgiving game in 2006, but he called things off in February. After Carrie was linked with actor Jesse Metcalfe and singer Oli-T., Tony won her back. This time, Tony’d better have a ring ready, warns a source!

Paris in Prison Day 2

TMZ has multiple inside sources who have painted a bleak picture of day # 2 in the slammer. In three words, "Paris is scared."
Paris has been crying on the phone, saying she's not sleeping or eating. Paris says her cell is "freezing cold." She has three little blankets and no pillow. She's using one of the blankets as a pillow. The room is bright and jail noise echoes through her space.

Sleep isn't the only problem. Paris says she has no appetite and has eaten almost nothing.

Inmates actually struck up a chant when Paris went back to her cell earlier today. As she walked by they struck up a chorus, "Paris! Paris! Paris!" We're told she smiled and waved. Some inmates have been coming up to her cell door, mostly to say hi. One inmate said, "You don't deserve to be here." Another made an origami butterfly from a magazine page and slipped it under her door. Another slipped a drawing book under her door. The guards, Paris says, have all been nice.

She's called her lawyer and family, but found it really hard to talk because there's a recording, "You have one minute left. This call is being recorded."

Victoria Beckham was crowned Woman of the Year by Glamour magazine. The former Spice Girl was hailed "a role model for achieving it all". The 33-year-old was a double winner - she also picked up the Entrepreneur of the Year award for her rapidly expanding fashion empire.

Posh jetted in from the MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles to attend the Glamour Women of the Year ceremony in London. Organizers had told her in advance about the Entrepreneur award but the Woman of the Year accolade was kept as a surprise.

Glamour editor Jo Elvin said: "For the past 10 years, Victoria Beckham has been a figure of fascination. She has successfully reinvented herself from pop star to devoted wife and mother to successful designer and business mogul."

Her business empire includes a jeans line for Rock and Republic, a collection of sunglasses, his'n'hers perfume, plus her own handbag and jewellery designs in Japan. She is also busy making her life in the US with husband David and their three children the subject of a fly-on-the-wall TV show.
