Oscars 2009: Best Hairstyles and Makeup Looks

Soft curly hairstyles, fuss-free updos and colorful makeup made the Academy Award nominees, winners and presenters shine

Though not all of our fave celebrities got to walk the Oscars red carpet (boo!) we did manage to snag photos of our most loved hair and makeup looks. Miss Angelina Jolie wins the award for most gorgeous all around (not shocking, we know). Though we must admit without the striking green jewels she may have been too blah. Proof, once again, that fashion and beauty are not mutually exclusive.

Drake x Complex Magazine.

It may sound heavily clichéd by now, but all Aubrey “Drake” Graham wants to do is keep it real. The Toronto-bred rapper who gained fame by playing basketball star Jimmy Brooks on the teen TV show Degrassi: The Next Generation has no intentions of fabricating his past or lying about the number of women he’s smashed off. He even has no problem talking about how he leased a Rolls Royce Phantom with his TV money just so he could stunt.

In this interview with Drake, he discusses any and everything going on in his life, from drama with ex-girls to family problems most would keep under wraps.
Here's a tad bit of the interview :

Complex: Many people don’t know too much about your outside of your role in Degrassi. Were you always into music?

Drake: As far as music goes, it’s always been a major part of my life. My uncle is Larry Graham played bass for Prince, my father, Dennis Graham, wrote for Al Green. [He helped] write “Let’s Stay Together” and “Love & Happiness.” My dad drummed for Jerry Lee Lewis. I’ve always been around great music. My family being from Memphis, Tenn, growing up around all the hip hop—Thee Six Mafia, Kingpin Skimmy Pimp, early Yo Gotti, shit like that was kinda what really influenced me.
How I got into rapping was, my dad was in jail for two years and he shared a cell wit this dude who didn’t really have anyone to speak to. So, he used to share his phone time with this dude and at the time I was probably 16 or 17, this dude was like 20-22, and he would always rap to me over the phone—it was Poverty, that was his rap name.

Complex: Talk to us about So Far Gone. What was the idea behind it?

Drake: It’s basically a story. It starts in January 2008 when I was kinda confused like, What am I really doing? I gave up acting all together to really do this music thing, and I was really truly confused. It’s way different than acting, there aren’t people to depend on, you really have to build your own thing basically from the ground up, you know, so in January not only was I confused about my career, I was also in a very destructive sort of us exhausting relationship with a female and it was just a bad headspace for me to be in. So that’s where the tape starts.

Complex: You brag a lot about different clothing brands. Which brands are you currently into?

Drake: One day to day that I always represent is Ransom. Matt George owns a clothing line along with Oliver, I represent them to the fullest. I love Comme des Garçons I wear that a lot. Helmut Lang, Nom de Guerre. Public School’s dope. I wear a lot of Marc Jacobs stuff. I really just wear whatever—I’m not really a hipster fashion dude, I wear wild shit like Jordan sweats and socks and sandals. I don’t get dressed up to get my license renewed, but when I step out I like to look presentable and I like to dress up, I like to wear nice Armani suits. But those are some brands I definitely like.

Complex: Where do you like to shop?

Drake: My favorite place to go shopping would probably be Barney’s. I shop at Nomad here in Toronto. I don’t want to start talking to crazy about clothes ’cause I know there are some guys who are super into it and they’re going to read this like, “Aw man what the fuck?” I know I rap about that shit, but it’s just cause at the moment I really might be about to put on a Margiela tux. I like YSL, too, I like YSL a lot. But yeah, I just don’t want ’Ye to read this and be like, “What the fuck is this dude talking about?”

OK, THATS ENOUGH. I PERSONALLY LIKE DRAKE & HIS MUSIC.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT HIM?
OH & CHECK OUT SO FAR GONE MIXTAPE, PRETTY COOL MIGHT I ADD!

Lil' Wayne x Criminal Gun Charges

Lil' Wayne looks like he's in for even more trouble. The rapper will face criminal gun possession charges at a trial scheduled to begin April 20, a New York judge said on Tuesday. Prosecutors allege a gun was found in his tour bus in July 2007 and if Wayne is convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of up to 15 years in prison.

Academy Awards 2009: My picks for gorgeous makeup/hairstyle/gown

The Academy Awards is probably the only awards show I see in the whole year, if not one of the few. I'm not a huge follower of the "Red Carpet" and all the award season craziness but I do like to watch the Oscars. Very emotional and all that. I get to see the dresses, makeup and hairstyles during the show, not the red carpet. Silly, I know, since it is in the red carpet that everyone says "my dress/hair/jewelry is from...". LOL

This time I saw more gorgeous gowns than previous years. My fave for both hairstyle and incredibly romantic/gorgeous!-gorgeous! evening gown have to be Nicole Kidman...just WOW! This lady is so classy, has such a classic beauty, it is surreal most of the times. And only someone as pale as her can pull off a dress like this. And her bob, with oh-so-soft curls, simply perfect.

Her gown was by L'Wren Scott
Her hairstyle was done by David Babaii (read more about it and how to copy it here!)

Here is a video a YouTuber made about Mrs. Kidman at the moment she was presenting an award.

My choice for makeup is Anne Hathaway. This young girl has a brilliant future in Hollywood, she is just an excellent actress. She looked royal in her white Armani Prive dress (my second favorite dress of the 2009 Oscars). She look very elegant indeed, but I do wish her hairstyle had been different. She looks older than she really is.

The good thing is she kept her makeup very simple, it "balanced" her whole look. About her makeup:

"[Anne Hathaway's] makeup look was sophisticated and elegant. Anne’s perfect brows framed her face and her long, lush lashes really made her eyes pop. She donned a deep berry-toned lip to complete her look. To get Anne’s look, try Lancôme Le Crayon Poudre in Sable to fill in and shape the brows. Lightly dust Lancôme Color Design Eye Shadow in Ciel du Soir over the entire eyelid followed by Le Crayon Khôl in Black Ebony applied to the upper lash line. Lightly smudge so there are no harsh lines. Apply several coats of Lancôme Ôscillation Mascara for a faux-lash effect. For just a hint of color, dust Lancôme Blush Subtil in Sheer Amourose on the apples of the cheeks. To create her berry stained pout, apply Lancôme Color Fever Lipstick in Brickhouse."--E. Cerminara, Lancome

Lancôme Blush Subtil

She had the most natural light makeup, though the MA did played with her eyes by defining her eyebrows and also applying black eyeliner on top for a sexy classic look. Her skin looked incredible. Her whole look was flawless.

Sticker Shock

So...I was flipping through my most recent mailing from Ulta today, checking out the deals and new beauty products--doing general Kiss and Makeup research.

Anyway, I saw this great new product:

Peter Thomas Roth
Lashes To Die For
Longer, thicker, fuller lashes!
Revolutionary, patent-pending complex dramatically enhances appearance of natural lashes. Within just 4-8 weeks, independent consumer studies prove 64% saw longer lashes, 67% saw thicker and fuller lashes, based on consumer studies.

My initial response? Awesome! Who can't use thicker, longer, fuller lashes? I want to try this out for all my dedicated Kiss and Makeup readers! It would be a win-win: I would try out a new product and get the possible benefit, and you all would be able to decide whether or not to buy this product based on my field work.

I was ready to make my purchase...

And then I saw how much Lashes To Die For would set me back: $125. For one stinking tube. $125.

Yeah...I think I'll pass. Sorry. My budget cannot justify a $125 test run.

Damn economy!

Haircut 100

I am recovering from being sick with a cold/flu and I'm also slowly getting back into work mode after being away for a week of break. During my scheduled week off, I made an appointment for a much needed hair cut and color. Because of my illness, I was forced to cancel and my hair is now an unruly mess. I am in desperate need of a restyle.

When it comes to hair, I wonder: how many of us have a signature look? It's all too easy to get used to a particular style....hell--people have hair ruts that last decades! If you have a signature hair style, do you actually like your style? Or are you ready for a change?

Me? On a good day, my hair style is inspired by Veronica Lake (above). On a bad day, I look more like Dave Mustaine from Megadeth (below), as I mentioned before. Apart from getting bangs in the Winter of '07-'08, my hair hasn't changed drastically in years...it's always been blonde, shoulder length, and pretty far from fabulous.

I think I want a change! If you're like me and need to change it up, here are some tips for getting a new style that you'll love:
  • First, figure out how much change you're willing to undergo. Sure, it might seem exciting to go from bleach-blonde to jet black overnight, but that sort of change could be more shocking than you're ready for. Make sure you are able to deal with seeing yourself in a whole new way. Also, take into consideration how your new look will fit in with your professional and personal life.
  • Be realistic. If you don't like to spend a lot of time styling your hair, you may not want to pick a 'do that will require hours of complex styling. Also take into consideration things you cannot change, like your hair's texture.
  • Flip through magazines or look online for hairstyles you might like. Don't get too hung up with a model's hair color...focus on the cut, the style, the profile, etc.
  • Take several options in with you when you see your stylist. Talk about what you want, and listen to the stylist's advice. If they don't think a pixie-cut will work for your face/hair type, they'll tell you. Your stylist wants you to look good and to be happy with your hair in the long term. They're professionals and they know what they're doing--listen to them!
  • If you don't have (or don't like) a stylist, ask friends, family, or co-workers where they go. Referrals are everything!
  • Pay attention when your hair is being dried and styled. Ask for step-by-step advice on recreating the look at home. This part is essential. It's all too easy to sit back in the stylist's chair and zone out or gossip while you're being worked on. Not good! Snap out of it and pay attention.
  • Give yourself time to get used to your new style. Your hair might go into shock after a drastic change. You may not be accustomed to seeing yourself with a different color/style. Don't panic if you don't love your cut/color immediately. Change can be jarring at first!
Ok--now I need to call my salon and get myself rescheduled...NOW!

Kanye's new boo.

Rapper Kanye West has been seen out on dates with video model Amber Rose, who’s known for dancing and appearing in music videos such as Ludacris’ “What Them Girls Like,” Young Jeezy’s “Vacation,” and for her very sexy, half-naked photo shoot for Smooth Magazine.

Lil Wayne tats Tyga

Well who would have knew Lil Wayne has so much hobbies other than rapping.Young Money artist Tyga trusts Weezy enough to put a vibrating needle to his face for some permanent ink. However, make sure you pay attention to the reasoning behind that tattoo that Wayne explains in the beginning.

P.S. thanks to my friend Maine for giving me this idea. ==]

Almost Back...

Okay...I am back from my mini-vacation to the Washington Coast. We had beautiful weather and an extremely relaxing break. Now? It's back to work and back to my normal routine. *Sigh*

I'll also get back to posting regularly here on Kiss and Makeup. I have plenty of beauty news to share, and I've been away for far too long.

Hang tight and I'll be back soon. Til then, happy Monday!

Oscars 2009: Who Will Win?

Finally... it's Oscar day! After a month of discussing whether Slumdog Millionaire will win Best Picture or if Kate Winslet will finally get her long-awaited golden statue, the moment has finally arrived.

As huge lovers of movies and all things Hollywood, we thought we'd share our picks for the top 6 categories. Our choices are based on industry buzz, personal preference, and gut feelings. We do not under any circumstances suggest you use our picks for any Oscar pool you might be doing...

Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire
Yes, we realize this is the safe choice. But with the amount of buzz this movie has generated, we feel it's an absolute no-brainer. Every now and then, the Academy votes for the feel-good movie of the year--and Slumdog looks like the next big winner.

Best Director: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
Do you see a trend? We think they'll sweep these top two awards. Beg to differ?

Best Actor: Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
We're not huge fans of Mr. Rourke but his performance was amazing and well respected across Hollywood. Many think Sean Penn may nab this one but we're going with our gut and picking Mickey. (Now if only he'd stop stalking Evan Rachel Wood...)
Best Actress: Kate Winslet, The Reader
Winslet's Oscar win is long overdue--we know it, she knows it, even the Academy knows it. Let's hope the universe works itself out and she wins a golden statue tonight. We heart Kate.

Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
Because his performance was THAT GOOD. He commanded your attention while onscreen and delivered an almost-perfect performance. The academy will most definitely recognize this with a win.
Best Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz, Vicki Cristina Barcelona
You couldn't take your eyes off her. She's an underrated actress who just might come into her own tonight.

LOOK/FOTD: Neutral using MAC EMBARK+CONCRETE+SHROOM

So yesterday I did this look because I wanted my eye makeup to match the gray color of my Classic Mickey Mouse shirt. The red lips were inspired on Mickey's red pants. I used neutral shades, my go to look for almost everyday. I applied MAC's Vanilla as a base, then on the crease I applied Concrete with the MAC 224 to obtain a soft look. On top of Concrete, but on the outer crease, I added Embark with the 217. I liked the results.

I wanted soft red lips, so I applied Loreal Colour Riche l/s in Red Rhapsody very lightly on top of lipbalm and then I put some Sally Hansen Diamond Lip Treatment in Pink Bouquet (which is more of a reddish pink).

And my hair, oh yes...well, it is the curl I get when I use styling products. My hair is normally wavy as you may have noticed in previous posts, but when I add curling creams I get a soft curl. In this case I used a Garnier Curling cream mixed with Garnier Leave-In conditioner cream. But I need even more definition, still looking for the right product.

FACE
MAC Prep+Prime SPF 50 mixed with Clinique Pore Minimizer T-Zone Shine Control Gel (got this tip from one of Petrilude's videos; I think he actually mixed the prep+prime with MAC Matte Cream, but this is similar)---worked like a charm!
REVLON Colorstay Makeup in Toast mixed with MAYBELLINE Instant Age Rewind Foundation in NUDE (Yay, found a bottle!)
MAC Full Cover Foundation in NC35 (used as concealer under the eyes and some other dark spots)
MAC Loose Blot Powder in Medium Dark
MAC Mineralize Blush in Merrily

EYES
MAC Soft Ochre P/P as base
MAC E/S in Vanilla, Embark, Shroom and Concrete
MAYBELLINE Line Express Eyeliner in Ebony Black (really creamy eyeliner, I like it)
MAC Mascara X in Black X
MAC Eyebrow pencil in Stud

LIPS
Carmex Lipbalm
Loreal Colour Riche L/S in Red Rhapsody
Sally Hansen Diamond Lip Treatment in Pink Bouquet

NOTE: I actually took these pics hours after applying my makeup. My face was not as oily as I would have expected. I'll keep experimenting with the primer mixed with the Clinique gel and see how it goes on the long run.

This pic looks different from the others because
the camera is a bit more farther

My hair with many flyaways...
at least it felt soft, lol

About two weekends ago..

...MOB linked up with Lia for a get together at her house.
As soon as we got there we were greeted by all who we didn't see in a long time. Then we sat down; chatted & caught up with our friends. We also met new friends..nothing new with MOB. But it wasnt long before Leontae and Mike started to act like this ....

Then we got restless,hungry,and cranky.lol

We then ordered pizza & acted as if we never ate before =\. Then as MOB said goodbye we took group pictures to remember Lia's get together.
